Denmark Announces Largest Arms Purchase in History
Denmark has announced its largest-ever arms purchase, committing over $9 billion to acquire European-made air defense systems in a historic move to bolster national and NATO security.

Denmark on September 12, 2025, unveiled the largest arms procurement in its history, approving a 58-billion Danish kroner (approximately $9.1 billion) deal to acquire advanced ground-based air defense systems from several European manufacturers. The Danish Ministry of Defense confirmed that the package includes eight medium- and long-range systems, notably the Franco-Italian SAMP/T, as well as systems from Norway, Germany, and France. This marks a significant shift in Denmark’s defense posture, as the country has lacked ground-based air defense since retiring its Hawk systems in 2004.
European Systems Chosen Over U.S. Alternatives
The decision to select European suppliers over the U.S.-made Patriot system was driven by considerations of cost, delivery speed, and operational requirements. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that lessons from the war in Ukraine, where air defense has proven critical, influenced the urgency and scope of the acquisition. Danish officials cited the SAMP/T’s 360-degree radar coverage and rapid deployment capabilities as decisive factors, while the U.S. Patriot system was deemed more expensive and slower to deliver. The Ministry noted that the new systems will provide nationwide coverage, protecting cities, military installations, and critical infrastructure.
Strategic and Political Implications
The procurement is seen as both a military and political milestone. By opting for European-made systems, Denmark is reinforcing its commitment to European defense cooperation and strategic autonomy, while still maintaining strong ties with NATO. The move comes amid heightened security concerns in Northern Europe, following recent Russian drone incursions into NATO airspace. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Defense Minister Poulsen have both underscored the need for Denmark to rapidly modernize its defenses in response to evolving threats.
The deal also signals a recalibration of Denmark’s defense spending priorities. The government has pledged to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, in line with NATO goals, and the current acquisition is a major step toward that target. The first air defense units are expected to be operational by 2025, with full deployment to follow in subsequent years.
Industry and NATO Impact
Analysts note that Denmark’s choice supports the European defense industry and strengthens NATO’s northern flank. The integration of SAMP/T and other European systems will enhance interoperability with neighboring countries, including France, Italy, Norway, and Germany. The layered defense architecture is designed to counter a range of threats, from cruise missiles to drones, reflecting lessons learned from recent conflicts.
While some experts have questioned the cost-effectiveness of deploying advanced systems against low-cost aerial threats, Danish officials maintain that the investment is essential for national security and alliance commitments. The procurement is expected to have long-term implications for European defense integration and may influence future procurement decisions across the continent.
