Moldova's National Anticorruption Center, in coordination with prosecutors, executed more than 30 raids across the country and detained one person for 72 hours in connection with allegations that a political party received illicit funding from Russia via cryptocurrency channels. According to the Times of India, investigators seized 800,000 lei in cash, accounting documents, and electronic devices, and traced approximately 9,000,000 lei in illicit funds that were allegedly funneled through layered cryptocurrency accounts and distributed by couriers. The anti-graft agency stated that the funds originated from members of a criminal group in the Russian Federation and were laundered through illegal crypto exchange services before being converted to cash and distributed to party affiliates.

The raids come just days before Moldovans are set to vote for a new 101-seat legislature, in an election widely viewed as a choice between continued European Union integration and closer ties with Russia. Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who has championed a pro-Western agenda, accused the Kremlin of spending hundreds of millions of euros to influence the vote and warned that Moldova's sovereignty and European future are at stake. On Monday, authorities detained 74 people in a separate operation targeting an alleged Russia-backed plot to incite mass unrest and destabilize the country around the election. Officials said the plot was coordinated from Russia, with suspects reportedly traveling to Serbia for training.

Moscow Denies Involvement, Blames West

The Russian government has repeatedly denied any interference in Moldova's internal affairs. Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service issued a statement accusing European politicians of forcing Moldova into what it called 'Russophobic policies' and attempting to manipulate the election outcome. The agency claimed that European officials were prepared to falsify votes to ensure Moldova remained aligned with Western interests. Moldovan authorities and international observers have increased monitoring of disinformation and election threats in response to the heightened tensions.
